Bush offers Gilani sympathies over Pakistan bombings

US President George W. Bush expressed his sympathies to Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday over recent terror attacks in the country, the White House said.

"The president expressed his sympathies to the people of Pakistan for the recent terrorist attacks that have killed so many innocents," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

"The president and prime minister reaffirmed their mutual support for going after these extremists that are a threat to both Pakistan, the United States and the entire world."

Bush expressed to Gilani the "strong commitment" from the United States "to working with the prime minister and the government of Pakistan to address the ongoing battle against extremists and to assist Pakistan through its current economic situation."

In the second bombing to rock the government since president Pervez Musharraf resigned on Monday, two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside Pakistan's main army munitions factory Thursday, killing 59 workers.

Earlier Thursday Bush also called Musharraf to wish him well and thank him for his efforts in the democratic transition of Pakistan, Johndroe said.
