The center of Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to dump rain on Bermuda as it brushes by island's east.
National Hurricane Center forecasters say Bertha will get close enough to bring tropical storm conditions and 3 to 5 inches of rain to the British Atlantic territory on Monday.
At 5 a.m. EDT, the center of Bertha was 90 miles southeast of Bermuda. It was moving toward the north-northwest near 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds were about 65 mph with higher gusting.
Bermuda residents have begun taping windows and securing boats. The tropical storm kicked up a deadly surf as far away as New Jersey, where authorities say one man drowned during an evening swim Saturday.
Bertha was the first hurricane of the Atlantic season before it weakened on Sunday.
