Stocks fell on Monday as the rescue of two major European banks and a takeover of Wachovia Corp's bank operations by Citigroup heightened concerns about the widening fallout from the credit crisis.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 138.35 points, or 1.24 percent, at 11,004.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 16.31 points, or 1.34 percent, at 1,196.70. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 36.88 points, or 1.69 percent, at 2,146.46.
