Pa. man to be extradited to Bosnia for '93 murder

A man who had been living in suburban Pittsburgh was ordered Tuesday to be returned to his native Bosnia-Herzegovina to face charges of fatally shooting another man almost 15 years ago.

U.S. Magistrate Amy Reynolds Hay ordered the extradition of Sadik Begic, 38 who had been living in Whitehall but was arrested Sept. 10 in Connecticut for overstaying his visa.

At a federal court appearance Sept. 11, Begic told the magistrate, I do not need an attorney. Please just send me to Bosnia.

Begic is accused of shooting Alemic Ibis during a party on Oct. 9, 1993, according to federal prosecutors and court documents from Bosnia. He was indicted in 1995 by a justice of the Bosnian District Military Court.

Witnesses said Begic was drinking and had threatened to shoot the band playing at the party before arguing with and firing at Ibis, documents said. He had also been firing the rifle randomly.

Begic admitted drinking brandy at the party and said the rifle discharged accidentally as he sat on a fence with the rifle on his knee, the documents said.

Begic will remain in the custody of U.S. Marshal's Service until he can be turned over to Bosnia and Herzegovina officials.
