Man indicted in murder of Denver Broncos' Williams

A grand jury has indicted a suspected gang member in the 2007 murder of Denver Broncos football player Darrent Williams, authorities said on Wednesday.

Willie Dewayne Clark, who is in federal custody on unrelated drug charges, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Williams killing, along with other charges stemming from the shooting, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said at a media conference.

Morrissey said there may be others charged in the murder. "This is not the end of the investigation, but a first step in this case," he said.

Williams, 24, was shot dead in the early morning hours of January 1, 2007.

The second-year cornerback was riding in a limousine in downtown Denver along with 15 other passengers when another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire. Williams was shot in the neck and died immediately.

Two other passengers were slightly wounded in the drive-by shooting, leading to attempted murder charges against Clark.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred after a confrontation at a nightclub between the suspected gang members and a group of people with Williams.

Clark, 25, was arrested in a federal drug sting along with 100 suspected gang members three months after the Williams shooting.

Court documents in the federal case indicated Clark and other members of the Crips street gang were under investigation for 11 unsolved murders in Denver, including the Williams shooting.

Clark will make his first court appearance in the murder case next week, Morrissey said.

The indictment also charges Clark with attempted murder, assault, illegal discharge of a weapon, and being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.
